Making Multi-Angle Videos, the easy way...

A lot of the videos I've done for youtube involve more than one camera.  I usually make these in Final Cut Pro and the most tedious step is the synchronisation of the video clips.

New software coming soon!

I've spent the best part of 4 months over the last 2 years writing two pieces of software specifically for drummers.

The original concept was to have something that would generate random rhythms from the basic sets of permutations and repeat them.  The idea being to train your ears.  It's evolved from that into something much more powerful and useful and can be used in many ways to inspire creativity, work on strange rhythms, and create new music.

Demo Reel

Here's a short showreel I put together back in 2006...

The Rhythm Machine

In March I went to New York and took some lessons with Billy Ward and Robby Ameen. One of the things Billy got me to do was play a groove then begin to gradually embellish it without losing the basic underlying groove. He specifically wanted me to hear in my head what I wanted to hear on the kit BEFORE I played it - rather than just throwing my arms around and hoping for the best.

At one point he came over to me and started singing rhythmic phrases for me to try and implement. This was his way of simulating what it's like when you're playing live with other musicians. Perhaps you're on a gig and the guitarist plays a rhythmic phrase and you want to mimic that on the toms, or the bass player does something cool and you want to answer his phrase with your bass drum.

New Gary Novak transcription in the Drum Vault

I've added a couple of things to the drum vault. Firstly one of my favourite drum solos by Gary Novak. It's from Tone Poem on Chick Corea's "Paint the world" and is a fine example of Gary's playing. I also included a midi file of the solo vamp and the drum part so you can open it and slow it down to whatever tempo you want.
Secondly I was asked via email to transcribe a drum fill from 'Fifty Fifty' from Zappa's Overnight Sensation.

Hearing Protection

Since early on in my drumming career I've been a big promoter of looking after your ears. Behind a drum kit it's very easy to wreck your hearing on a single gig. I know so many 'macho' musicians who complain about the sound degradation when wearing ear plugs and I know what they mean, but I also know many musicians with tinnitus (a constant ringing or white noise) and once they have it they regret not being more careful.
