Re: Correctly identifying time signatures by ear

Hi John, Thanks for your message. I had a look for the post and couldn't find it either ;) Identifying time signatures isn't necessarily easy. Basically it's a case of finding where the loop is and some drummers like to play over that to disguise the join. That can make it difficult to figure out th...

Re: BASE KICK TECHNIQUE & PRACTICE

Hey,

Thanks for joining!

I'm the same as you - left hand and bass drum are weaknesses. At least, they're not up to the level of my right hand. You'll find pretty much all the MasterClass lessons cover ideas to develop these areas - hopefully you'll get something out of them.

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Soloing around accents

Reading from books on a pad is just a way of getting familiar with rhythmic notation. You're right that it's a completely different discipline to orchestrate fills around something that's written. However, having lightening fast reading is a good starting point and there are limitless possibilities ...

Re: Soloing around accents

Hi, I remember having the exact same question years ago. Come to think about it I'm still not sure what the answer is. Let's think about it.... For starters, you obviously need to know what the accents are. If you're reading them from a chart then your reading needs to be good enough so you actually...

Re: Snare Cymbal fills

Hi Mark, It's basically just fast triplets with accents on the crashes and kick together. For example (capital letters = an accent on the appropriate crash along with the kick).... R l R l r l R l R l r l R l R l r l etc. This is similar to what Steve Smith plays on the first clip, however he's chan...

Re: Snare Cymbal fills

Hi Mark,

You'll have to give me more info than that. If they play it all the time then presumably you'll be able to find something on youtube where they're doing it. If you can find me an example I'll let you know what's going on.

Cheers,
Joe

Re: Cymbals

Hi Dolau, Thanks for your suggestion. I remember wondering all the same things when I started out. The few times I made the trek to the nearest decent drum shop (2 hours away) to choose my own cymbals I was disappointed when I got home and tried them on the kit. Then I started checking out what my f...
