It's cool.
I think there's a lot of stretching going on - using groups of 5s and 7s and just feeling phrases while keeping a steady hihat.
Check out this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7M_guTvIwI - you'll see him demonstrate a groove that occurs in this solo. He says he plays it using flams with the grace note on the beat and the accent a little late. I think he was trying to immitate the groove from 'One Thing' by Amerie.
Hope that helps...

Yes! Maybe it could be a nice lesson, the "stretching" one.
Maybe pick one phrase or two and try to find a organic way to
stretched in one pulse, two pulses, etc.
Do you investigate some of that stuff?
I play around with ideas. There are a few things I might look at for a lesson.
In soundchecks, when I have to hit a floor tom again and again, I'll subdivide into quintuplets in my head and hit on different ones. Maybe on the 4th note for a while, then on the 3rd one. I try to get comfortable playing on all the different partials, then I can move them around. I'll do the same with triplets, 16ths, 16th triplets, etc. It sounds kind of glitchy when you mix and match them. The fact that you're always playing accurate stuff means you can comfortably keep the hihat on the quarter note and stay in time.
